The TrashTech team created an intelligent waste bin, like a Fitbit for waste, to reduce household waste. It featured machine learning software for waste identification, a smart bin for data collection, and a user interface. Their prototype successfully captured data, categorized waste into six types with over 96% accuracy, and transmitted it via Wi-Fi, demonstrating how technology can encourage sustainable habits.
The Acknos Prosthetics team developed a prosthetic thumb with tactile sensing to provide sensory feedback for better object grip. The design includes an Arduino Uno for data processing, custom PCB for power, a 3D-printed thumb with pressure sensors, and vibrotactile feedback. By prioritizing biocompatibility, comfort, and cost, the team created a product that could enhance the user experience for individuals with disabilities.
The Aeroflex team developed a landing gear system for search and rescue helicopters to safely land on slopes up to 20 degrees. Inspired by suspension systems, they designed a flexure-based gear that adapts to rough terrain using a spring-damper mechanism. Through simulations, they showed the system could handle a 20-degree slope and 6-inch offset, meeting safety and weight requirements. The prototype used inertial sensors to adjust the landing gear, demonstrating the feasibility for improving the safety of rescues in challenging environments.
